The US House of Representatives has successfully passed an appropriations bill for the upcoming fiscal year, featuring significant provisions for Taiwan, including US$500 million in Foreign Military Financing (FMF). The bill, which cleared the House with a 217-209 vote, also promotes Taiwan’s involvement in international organizations.
With an allocation of US$47.32 billion in discretionary funds, the new legislation marks a decrease from the current fiscal year’s budget, aligning with the administration’s spending objectives. Despite the reduced budget, the bill continues to support essential US allies such as Taiwan, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt, while addressing challenges from nations like China and Iran.
A key aspect of the bill is the directive for the US Secretary of State, working together with the Defense Secretary, to prioritize the provision of defense equipment and services to Taiwan. The legislation also designates at least US$4 million for the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, which is executed through the American Institute in Taiwan.
Furthermore, the bill includes a prohibition on the use of funds for the creation or display of maps that inaccurately represent Taiwan’s territorial boundaries or governing system. This reflects a firm stance on Taiwan’s representation in official documents and materials.
Before becoming law, the bill requires approval from the US Senate and must subsequently receive the president’s signature. These next steps are crucial for the enactment of the proposed funding and provisions.
