Amid increasing military pressure from China, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the importance of ongoing U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. In a recent statement, Yui highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to enhancing its defense spending and improving its capability to address potential security threats. He emphasized that Taiwan must not depend solely on external assistance, but rather focus on investing in its own defense readiness.
A significant U.S. weapons package valued at approximately $14 billion, intended for Taiwan, is currently under review by the U.S. administration. This proposed package has garnered support from several U.S. lawmakers who consider Taiwan’s defense needs increasingly pressing, especially in light of China’s expanding military activities within the region.
Yui remarked that the level of military support provided should correlate with the perceived threat level, pointing to frequent Chinese military exercises, as well as warship and aircraft operations near Taiwan, as indicators of the growing threat. He reiterated Taiwan’s objective to safeguard its security and democratic system primarily through defensive means.
Officials in Washington have affirmed that the U.S. policy concerning Taiwan remains unchanged, with continued support for Taiwan’s security being a vital aspect of the bilateral relationship. Despite the ongoing regional tensions, Taiwan has expressed confidence in its enduring partnership with the United States.
