In a significant diplomatic engagement, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng recently held discussions in Hanoi with Jennifer Wicks, the newly appointed US Ambassador to Vietnam. This meeting underscored Vietnam’s commitment to advancing its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the United States, reflecting the importance both nations place on their bilateral relationship.
Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng emphasized the status of the United States as one of Vietnam’s most crucial partners. He expressed a desire for enhanced cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, education, digital transformation, and security. He advocated for the completion of a fair and balanced bilateral trade agreement, which he believes would offer greater certainty and benefits to businesses operating in both countries.
The talks also delved into areas of cooperation such as defense, cybersecurity, and law enforcement, while humanitarian assistance initiatives were also highlighted. A significant portion of the dialogue was dedicated to addressing the lingering effects of the Vietnam War. Both countries committed to ongoing efforts in areas such as dioxin cleanup, unexploded ordnance removal, and the identification of soldiers still missing from the conflict.
Ambassador Wicks reiterated the United States’ dedication to strengthening economic ties with Vietnam and supporting its developmental objectives. She highlighted the importance of collaboration in education, innovation, maritime security, and handling regional issues. Additionally, Wicks assured the continuation of joint humanitarian programs that tackle war legacy issues, and she emphasized the need to foster closer people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
