Vietnam has emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation between ASEAN and the United States in critical areas such as trade, artificial intelligence, digital technology, and energy transition during the recent ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with the U.S. in Manila. Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung highlighted the importance of Washington’s commitment to peace, stability, and development in the region. He urged both parties to swiftly finalize a new comprehensive work program to strengthen their partnership.

In his address, Minister Trung suggested broadening collaboration in pivotal sectors, including trade and investment, the digital economy, semiconductors, and innovation. He also underscored the significance of energy transition and regional energy connectivity. Additionally, Trung called for the U.S. to continue its support for the Mekong sub-region, particularly in water management, climate change adaptation, infrastructure development, and workforce training.

Regarding regional security, Trung stressed the importance of upholding peace and resolving disputes through dialogue and adherence to international law. He appreciated the U.S.’s ongoing support for ASEAN’s stance on the South China Sea and encouraged efforts to bolster an open, inclusive, and rules-based regional order centered around ASEAN. Turning his attention to developments in the Middle East, Trung advocated for increased dialogue and the restoration of safe maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the need to protect freedom of navigation under international law.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated Washington’s support for ASEAN, highlighting Southeast Asia’s strategic and economic significance. He committed to continued U.S. investment in various sectors, including supply chains, the digital economy, energy security, power-grid connectivity, and civil nuclear cooperation. This collaboration aims to deepen economic ties and expand cooperation in high-value industries.

Both ASEAN and the United States agreed on the importance of strengthening people-to-people exchanges and improving coordination to address challenges such as terrorism, cybercrime, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and online scams. This mutual understanding and commitment set a framework for future cooperation and growth in the region.
